Introduction
The fund came into existence in 1868 when the Most Worshipful Grand Master, the Reverend George Raymond Portal believed it necessary for the Mark Degree to have its own Benevolent Fund, so that effective charity could be dispensed swiftly and without bureaucracy. The very first grant of five pounds being made to a Mark Brother who had lost virtually everything he possessed in a shipwreck. The object of the Fund is to afford assistance to brethren, their widows, children or sisters, by means of grants subject to the Fund rules. The Fund has distributed over 22 million pounds since it was first established.
